Silver Key was founded in 1970 in Colorado Springs by a group of concerned citizens who wished to improve the quality of life for older individuals. Founder Betsey Myers-Burroughs, advocate Clifford King and an impassioned group of conscientious citizens left their mark on this organization. Through their leadership and energy of Silver Key’s first Executive Director, Mikki Kraushaar, we incorporated as a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization and officially opened our doors in October 1971 with funding from the Older Americans’ Act. From these humble origins grew a Nursing Home Volunteer Program to help alleviate the effects of isolation and loneliness for elderly residents. Silver Key soon broadened its mission to assist seniors who desired to age in place, independently, in their homes.

Steadily by decade, services, programs, staff and volunteers continued to expand to address the rapidly growing needs among older adults. Silver Key’s strategic relocation in 2015 from our smaller westside location to an expanded campus in southeast Colorado Springs supports our ultimate vision: the value, worth and needs of all seniors are identified and honored. Silver Key annually serves more than 11,000 seniors in the Pikes Peak region with a wide variety of needs, and is a well-known resource for older adults. Silver Key employs 80+ staff and is supported by more than 600+ volunteers.

Thanks to visionary leadership, impassioned volunteers, dedicated staff, diverse funding sources and the philanthropic culture of this community, Silver Key has helped more than half a million seniors remain safe, independent, healthy and thriving over the last fifty years. We look ahead with enthusiasm to greater opportunities in affordable housing for seniors and collaborative partnerships to improve the lives of older adults and their families.
